About us
History
|
The Just Dirt Trust was formed in August 2011 by Selwyn Eagle and John Patterson. Both men agreed that they didn’t like traditional gardening, which often involved hard physical work and mess, and so came up with the concept of ‘easy gardening’. This makes use of raised beds of great quality soil stocked with healthy plants that require little weeding.
The trust aims to help people create places they can garden. These can be shared community gardens, which are looked after by a number of people, or the gardens of individuals. We have found that these places open up a variety of opportunities for the people who care for them; the more they are involved, the more they receive. We have been busy over the last five years and have been involved in a number of projects including:
We are able to operate because of the hard work of our volunteers and the kindness of the organisations and business that support our work. Not long after we started the trust organised a successfully fund raising dinner at Visions Restaurant at CPIT, which hosted 60 guests, and we have received a grant from Christchurch City Council and donations from local kindergardens and a marae. Our vision is to have more people, through the growing of their own fruit and vegetables, eating more healthily than are not. Having said this, we are more than happy to help people who just want to plant flowers in their gardens! |
